A Tsunami Generated by a Strike‐Slip Event: Constraints From GPS and SAR Data on the 2018 Palu Earthquake

نویسندگان

چکیده

A devastating tsunami struck Palu Bay in the wake of 28 September 2018 Mw = 7.5 earthquake (Sulawesi, Indonesia). With a predominantly strike-slip mechanism, question remains whether this unexpected was generated by itself, or rather earthquake-induced landslides. In study we examine potential co-seismic deformation. To end, present novel geodetic dataset GPS and multiple SAR-derived displacement fields to estimate 3D surface deformation field. The data reveal number fault bends, conforming our interpretation tectonic setting as transtensional basin. Using Bayesian framework, provide robust finite solutions slip distribution, incorporating several scenarios tectonically feasible orientations below bay. These involve large uplift ( > 2 m) bay due thrusting on restraining bend that connects offshore continuation two parallel onshore segments. estimates input simulate cases. For most locations for which video-derived waveforms are available models qualitative fit leading wave arrival times polarity. modeled tsunamis explain observed runup. We conclude main driver behind followed earthquake. Our unique constrains vertical motions sea floor, sheds new light tsunamigenesis faults basins.

Surface Effects of the 2004 Indonesian Earthquake and Tsunami from SAR data

On December 26, 2004, at 00:58 GMT a Mw 9.0 earthquake took place in the Indian Ocean, offshore the West coast of Sumatra, at a depth of about 30 km. This earthquake is one of the largest events of the last 100 years, comparable only to the Chile 1960 and Alaska 1964 ones. The earthquake originates in the subduction zone of the Indian and Burma plates, moving at a relative velocity of 6 cm/year...

Detailed analysis of tsunami waveforms generated by the 1946 Aleutian tsunami earthquake

The 1946 Aleutian earthquake was a typical tsunami earthquake which generated abnormally larger tsunami than expected from its seismic waves. Previously, Johnson and Satake (1997) estimated the fault model of this earthquake using the tsunami waveforms observed at tide gauges. However, they did not model the second pulse of the tsunami at Honolulu although that was much larger than the first pu...
